Building a Site
Before
you start - market research - site structure
If you already know what type of site you
are
going to build, fine. If not and you need a topic/product to sell,
think of a special interest and do a research on keywords to see if
there is enough interest and/or competition. Look at chapter make info
product for more information about this issue. Before you start
designing a site you should outline
very well
the topics, the menu items, the headers and linking between the
pages.
How
to make the site
A site you can either make yourself or order one from a web designer.
To
make one yourself you need to learn the programming language HTML which
is used to make Internet sites. There are many programs which make it
easier to design using WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) - tools.
Well known and a lot used programs are Dreamweaver, Frontend,
etc.
A very good and free program is MyFreeWebSiteBuilder.
One of the best and easiest to use programs to add graphics and
automatically build complete comercial sales sites with the click of a
mouse is The
Design Dashboard. Checkout this
extremely
powerful and simple to use software if you want to start immediately.
When starting the design of a site that you want to use for comercial
purposes it is very important before
you begin, to design with the search engine rules and keywords
in mind. This has to be done before
structuring the site and writing the text. See chapter about search
engines.
Register the name (Domain name)
Before you can use and upload the site you need a unique name for that
site which has to be registered.
Some well known companies for
registration are http://godaddy.com , http://bravenet.com,
http://host4profit.com etc. First you have to check
whether the name you want is available. The register companies will
therefore first ask you to type in the name you want and then they will
show whether it is available. The extension can be .com This is the
most used extension and was introduced to make clear it is a commercial
.site. Other extensions are .org for organization, .gov for
governmental sites etc. Also you can use .biz or .info But the most
used and easiest to remember extension is .com. Nowadays a fast
growing extension is .PWS (Personal Web Site) and .name. As
soon as you have found and registered a good name for your site you can
upload it on the Internet.
Hosting/Provider
After you built, or got the site ready from a web designer and
registered
the name (domain name) it should be uploaded on the Internet. The
Internet consists of huge number of computers who are all
conected together worldwide. These computers/companies are called providers and have
stored the sites/pages people can see on the
Internet. They have standards for the connections and standard ways
(protocols) of transmitting the information. Every provider and every
computer with access to the Internet has a unique number (address)
called IP (Internet Protocol)-address making it possible
to send or
obtain information quickly to and from any computer connected to the
Internet in the world. You can choose any provider/company to put
(host) your site on. They have different prices and services. Some good
ones are Bravenet, Host4profit, GoDaddy etc.
